My Lamont Heritage and Triumph over Tragedy In my recent blog on my Lamont heritage I recounted how as a young lad I had spent considerable time exploring and getting to know   the lands of Cowal and Bute . It transpired that   my Lamont antecedents   had   been   born and   lived there and about – something   which I was ,in those far off  days ,totally unaware !My mother was a Lamont . I was the third   generation   to have been   born and   brought up far distant   from our native soil . My great grandfather John Lamont had been   born on the Island of Bute in 1841   the son of Colin Lamont , fisherman and crofter .The famine   of the 1840s destroyed the potatoes in the   fields and also   saw the herring desert the waters of the Forth of Clyde and head westwards to the colder   waters of the Atlantic , The Lamonts   became domiciled in Glasgow and Colin the   herring fisher became a venetian blind painter ! My researches into my family history preceded t

My Lamont Heritage

MY LAMONT HERITAGE Colin Lamont Mayall I was born and brought up in the County of Renfrew across the Firth of Clyde from Bute and Cowal . My birth place was about 30 miles south west of where my Lamonts dwelt in Kilmun and Inverchaolain . I had perhaps an inbred affinity with these places which really only became fully known to me much later in my life . As a child I holidayed on the Island of Cumbrae in the County of Bute . As a teen ager I stayed in the Youth Hostel at Strone adjacent to Kilmun and Hafton birth place of John Lamont or McPhorich and Catherine Buchanan my 3 x great grandparents but a fact that at that time was unknown to me . I walked the hills where the Lamonts crofted and I fished for saithe in the waters of the Holy Loch where some 150 years earlier John and Neil plied there trade . As a student I spent time at Tigh na bruaich on the Kyles of Bute and walked the tortuous route ten miles or so along Loch Ridden’s  banks to Colintraive opposite Rhobodach an

Is treading the “ Boards “a family tradition ? Introduction It was great   to hear that our nephew Callum Sharp had recently   graduated with   distinction   from Drama College . A part in a BBC   series awaits as a   starter and all the world is   now his stage ! Callum’s success in finding something   which was   awaiting   his own particular talent and ability augurs   much for a   successful future . Interestingly this recent happening   stirred up   my   own memories of chats   with the late James C Sharp   . my father in law and Callum’s   grandfather . Jimmy would oft   elaborate on the family   connections   with one Diana Wynyard .   Who ?   - you might ask . Wynyard was undoubtedly a   star of her time although Jimmie’s claim   that   she   was a   “ distant cousin “   never   seemed   to   be established in any   sort   of genealogical way ! Let   us examine the confusing   roots that are there and see if some   facts   can   be established ! Diana
