A Look At Ochtertyre Its Tenants And Holdings In 1865.





I have in my collection , the original Rental Book for Ochtertyre Estate near Crieff  covering the years 1865/ 1866 . That was some 150 years ago , and , as  you would expect , things  have, since then , changed more than a little ! In those far off days , the Laird  was Sir Patrick Keith Murray ( born 27 January 1835 ) and his  residence was Ochtertyre House built in 1785/1789 to the design of architect ,James McLeran . The Estate was a thriving source of income to the Murray family .  The Rental Book shows the holdings of the Estate  split into the three distinct areas all owned  by the  Murray family . These  were Ochtertyre itself ( to the  west of Crieff ) , Fowlis Wester (east of Gilmerton ) and Fowlis Easter  immediately  west of Dundee . The  Roll lists building leases , farms , holdings of labourers and cottars , grass parks and dwellings .

Fowlis Easter

 Note ( March 2016): Fowlis Easter Castle

Despite the substantial rebuilding the Gray's sold the site in 1667 to Sir William Murray of Ochtertyre who occupied it until the eighteenth century. But around 1780 they shifted their main residence to Ochtertyre House leaving the castle abandoned until Sir Patrick Keith Murray extensively renovated and updated it in the mid-nineteenth century (another carved stone gives the date as 1862) to support farm workers on the adjacent estates. Later a modern extension was added to the north side of the Tower House whilst the cone shaped roof is also modern and unlikely to have represented the original design. Today the castle is a private residence with no public access.

Note : A simple Purchasing Power Calculator would say that the relative  value of this amount of  £ 10,324  in 2014 would be £881, 600 .

    I came across this blog whilst researching my family tree and found it very interesting. My grandfather, uncle and cousin have Robertson as their middle name because my great grandmother was a Robertson. Her grandfather was a George Robertson who worked for the Murrays of Ochtertyre from 1805 to 1857. He lived in Fowlis Wester and had 6 children christened there (except for the first at Monzievaird in 1808). After his wife died in 1822 he soon married a recent widow Margaret Murray(nee). The 1841 and 1851 censuses have them residing at Easter Fowlis where he was Land Steward - they both died there in the 1850s according to a memorial in the churchyard. One of his sons Peter then became Land Steward at Fowlis Easter until his death.

Glen Artney and Auchnashelloch : A Royal Forest and Comrie’s Highland Heritage .

A number of years ago I purchased a  small booklet on Glen Artney in the book shop  that existed for  some years in Drummond Street Comrie. The author was the late Gordon Booth FSA , a superb researcher and accomplished author . He was not a local man since moving to the village  from I believe the Island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides. Since arriving in the area, he  had  read and assimilated much of the history and folk lore of this part of the Strath  .I recall the late Tom Weir ( of the woolly hat ) doing a programme in his Weir’s Way series on Glen Artney an d featuring Gordon Booth . Regrettably  all seven of his little books are out of print although they may be available to borrow through Perth and Kinross Library Service. I have incorporated partial excerpts from his  writings in this blog on the Glen which I duly acknowledge as a fitting tribute to his diligence .
